Bay Street, Brighton-Le-Sands readies for second closure this year

A slice of the road will welcome pedestrians onto its six lanes for three consecutive weekends from the end of May.

A 200m section of a road in Brighton-Le-Sands is set to close for three consecutive weekends in June to combat hooning and encourage greater pedestrian use.

The closure of Bay Street, between Grand Parade and Moate Avenue, will welcome pedestrians onto the street that is usually packed with traffic.

The initiative – a collaboration with council and Transport for NSW – follows from the “outstanding success” of the ‘Streets Alive’ festival in 2022 that demonstrated that re-routing traffic from Bay St was viable, as well as a similar three-week trial earlier this year.

The 200m strip of Bay Street will be closed from 5pm Friday to 10pm Sunday on the last weekend of May (26-28th) and the first two weekends of June (2-4th, 9-12th). During these times, businesses along the strip will be encouraged to offer alfresco dining on the road.

Some residents have raised concerns on local Facebook groups about the upcoming closure after bad experiences with previous trials that “moved the problem somewhere else”, redirecting traffic and hooning into quiet back streets such as Kings Road.

The Greek Festival was planned to make most of the road closure on May 27, with food trucks, stalls and traditional live entertainment and music expected to bring the area to life – although the event has been postponed due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

This year would have been the 41st time the event has gone ahead since it was founded in 1980.
